20 Images - Photography Principles

Balance - This album cover has so much color going on, so I decided to place it on a white background and let the overexposed colors balance against the plain background.

Pattern - I tried to think of how to show pattern with my cassette.  I was inspired by the bicycle picture from the slides, and lined them up in a similar style, also creating depth in the image.

Symmetry - By putting this cassette directly in the middle of the window, the lines coming down create a symmetrical background.
Rule of Odds - I took two more cassettes and added them into this shot.  I made the active decision to make it non symmetrical, because that would evoke a different feeling from this picture.

Viewpoint (High) - Cassettes are not big objects, but when taken from this perspective they really appear small.

Viewpoint (Low) - It is funny how such a small object can look monstrous.  It is still clear this isn't a large object, but from this viewpoint it looks like if it fell, it would crush you.

Negative space - I actually really like this photo.  Its so plain, and the negative space feels like a complete void, but the cassette in the corner is something to fix your eyes on.

Fill the Frame - By taking a photo so close up, it leaves no room for distractions. You are forced to look at this cassette.

Framing - I tried to think of a fun way to frame the cassette.  I decided that by putting it between CDs it would incorporate music, but since the CDs aren't the focus of the photo, it works as an effective frame.

Depth of Field (Wide) - The cassette is still clearly the focus, but the whole shot is wide and the background is visible, but not focused.

Depth of Field (Shallow) -  In this image, the cassette is close up and in focus.  The background is semi visible, but out of focus and not clear enough to distract the viewer.

Leading Lines - Incorporating the tile lines, and grabbing some plastic as slanted leading lines, depth is created, and the lines all lead right to the focus of the photo.

Rule of Thirds - I visually split this image into vertical thirds.  I allowed the cassette to occupy the left third of the overall image.

Technique of Choice #1 - Rule of Odds

Technique of Choice #2 - Depth of Field (Shallow)

Technique of Choice #3 - Symmetry

Technique of Choice #4 - Viewpoint (Low)

Technique of Choice #5 - Framing.

Technique of Choice #6 - Viewpoint (High)

Golden Ratio - By having this image more towards the center than in the rule of thirds, the golden ratio is achieved.  With a semi plain background, nothing distracts from the cassette.
